Food and wine

Coffee time in Lake Wanaka
06, May 2010
Lake Wanaka is a food lover's dream. Award winning vineyards, exquisite restaurants, boutique breweries and shops full of local treats. A trip to Wanaka wouldn't be complete without a visit to local farmers market on a Saturday morning in summer.

Full day suggestions:
  • With over 45 wineries in the region,  a wine tour is a must for lovers of pinot noir and pinot gris
  • Take a horse trek up the historic Cardrona Valley on appaloosa horses and then stop off at the Cardrona Hotel for lunch or dinner
  • Catch a salmon or trout with one of our locals guides and if you ask them nicely they will smoke it for you
Half day suggestions:
  • Grab a picnic lunch or some nibbles and walk around to Rippon Vineyard for a wine tasting in the most picturesque vineyard in the world or take a horse ride at the vineyard and finish with a wine tasting
  • Beer lovers will enjoy the handcrafted beers at Lake Wanaka's boutique brewery - Wanaka Beerworks
  • Why not have a delicious French Hot Chocolate drink made from scratch at Jumping Tangents . They are truly to die for!
  • A visit to the Mediterranean Market for locally made ice cream and Simon's speciality meats is a must.
  • Take a trike tour out to the Luggate Hotel to try our merino, rabbit and venison on our plate
Evening suggestions:
  • Many or our Wanaka chefs have won awards so ask around for the best spot to dine
  • Cinema Paradiso is a must do in Wanaka – quirky cinema that has homemade cookies and ice cream at intermission, or order a meal and glass of wine for half time
