Total Population 2013:
  • 8,646 people usually live in the Lake Wanaka area. This is an increase of 1,572 people, or 22.4% since the 200 census.
  • 6,474 people usually live in Wanaka. This is an increase of 1,437 people, or 28.5%, since the 2006 Census.
  • 2,172 people usually live in Hawea. This is an increase of 537 people, or 33.6%, since the 2001 Census.

  • Europeans 82.1% (NZ 67.6%)
  • Maori 5.4% (NZ 14.6%)
  • Pacific 0.3% (NZ 6.9%)
  • Asia 1.1% (NZ 9.2%)
  • Middle East, Latin America, Africa 0.2% (NZ0.9%)
  • 3,585 were males and 3,429 were females
Workforce 2006:
  • 18.5% are under 15 years of age
  • 72.5% are 15 - 64 years of age
  • 9% are over 65 years of age
Wealth 2006:
  • Of the people aged 15 years and over, the median income is $27,600 compared to $24,400 for New Zealand.
Education 2006:
  • 50.8% of people aged 15 years and over have a post-school qualification, compared with  33.9% for New Zealand.
