Wanaka Weather & Climate

Wanaka enjoys a continental climate with four distinct seasons and fairly dry weather conditions year round.

The town's average annual rainfall of 682mm is just half the national average, with most rainfall occurring in spring months. During summer, days are hot and evenings cool, while in winter, days are cold with frost and snow in surrounding mountain ranges.

  • Spring: October - December: changeable, wettest months.      10 - 19°C
  • Summer: January - March: hot and dry                                           16 - 30°C
  • Autumn: April - June: warm, temperate days, cool nights           10 - 23°C
  • Winter: July - September: crisp, clear days, cold nights                0 - 14°C

 The best time for autumn colours is usually the first two weeks in April.
