Family and Kids

Families love the Lake Wanaka region. The ultimate family friendly resort, there is heaps to do all year round. With so much choice and so many adventures to be had the only issue will be in deciding which of the four seasons to take your family holiday!

The perfect place for a family snow holiday, Lake Wanaka is home to three fantastic ski areas. Laid-back cafes, a huge variety of off-snow activities for children of all ages and a range of accommodation from motels to hotels and apartments, and comprehensive ski and snowboard programmes for kids of all ages mean that your winter holiday is not only fun – it’s relaxing!  Above all, the mountains provide terrain to suit both parents and children alike, and offer some of New Zealand's best kids skiing.

Family-focused Cardrona Alpine Resort has superb beginner and intermediate slopes, a dedicated Kids Club centre for ski and boarding instruction, childcare facilities, and qualified care and instruction for toddlers through to teenagers. Week long programmes specifically tailored to your child’s level mean their skills are nurtured toward their abilities and give them confidence to advance. Skiwees, Lowriders, a kickstart private lesson and the Academy for the intermediate and advanced kids, are all popular ski and snowboard options for the school holidays.

Treble Cone , the South Islands largest ski area, is famous for its long un-crowded groomed runs, legendary off-piste terrain and unrivalled views over Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps.

For beginner skiers and snowboards, Treble Cone provides FREE lift access to the ‘Nice n’ Easy’ surface lifts located alongside the comforts of the Base lodge and café and the convenience of a fully kitted ski and snowboard rental shop. Smooth your progression with a discounted First Timer Package including beginner lift access, a group lesson, ski or snowboard hire and a scenic chairlift ride.

For intermediate skiers and snowboards, Treble Cone’s massive 700m of vertical makes space for some of New Zealand’s longest groomed trails including the 4km High Street / Easy Rider leg burner. For the best view over Lake Wanaka, cruise Raffles Run, a wide blue groomed trail accessed from the Saddle Basin chairlift. For the more adventurous, head down Saddle Back for a taste of Treble Cone’s famous off-piste terrain.

If it is advanced terrain you are after, the Saddle Basin and Summit Slopes are a playground of open powder faces, natural half pipes and fun drops. Or for the Export skier and snowboard, the Motatapu Chutes are a unique way of exploring the backcountry within the boundaries of patrolled and protected ski area.

No matter what level of skier or snowboarder you are, Treble Cone creates a real New Zealand snow experience that will have you grinning ear to ear.

Snow Farm If you can walk you can cross country ski. You can go as fast or as slow as you wish.  Whether you are the daring downhill daredevil or prefer a gentler slope we have the terrain for you. Tubing is a great way for all members of the family to enjoy their time on the snow, as are snow shoeing and dog sledding – all available in winter at Snow Farm. Everything you need for an awesome time on the snow is up at Snow Farms comprehensive facilities with rentals, cafes and plenty of space to chill out after a busy day on the snow.

Anything is possible in the Lake Wanaka region. Mix and match the mountains to your family’s individual requirements. Buy a OnePassNZ and the world of Wanaka snow is yours for the taking, ski all three Wanaka ski fields plus four others in the South Island.

Shuttle services provide daily transport to both mountains, although self-driving gives more flexibility – just be sure to be prepared with snow chains!

All the fields offer family equipment, lift pass and tuition packages as well as first timer packs and reduced multi-day passes. Tuition packages include single to four day ski and snowboard improvement courses specially designed for kids at different abilities and in different age groups.

Not just for winter, Lake Wanaka’s distinct four seasons provide family fun all year round. There are heaps of activities for kids and families no matter what your family passions.
