Largest field ever for Puzzling World Junior Challenge Wanaka...
13 January 2013 - Over 250 children from throughout New Zealand today marked the opening of the Challenge Wanaka Triathlon Festival with the Puzzling World Junior Challenge Wanaka.
The children, aged between six and 15, swam, biked and ran through Lake Wanaka and around Pembroke Park with not only personal pride at stake but also a spot as a balloon kid, running down the finish chute behind the winners of Challenge Wanaka next Saturday.
“When we woke to thunder and lightening and torrential rain this morning our hearts sank,” said Challenge Wanaka’s Victoria Murray-Orr. “But it takes more than a few drops of rain to put these kids off and by race start the weather had cleared to a beautiful calm, blue sky day! It was great to see so many determined faces out there as they raced around the course and the pride as ”
The Challenge Wanaka Triathlon Festival continues tomorrow (Monday) with the Radio Wanaka 5km Charity Fun Run followed by Swim the Course on Wednesday morning. Some of the world’s top short course athletes will race in Tri NZ’s Contact Cup on Friday night before the flag ship iron distance triathlon, Challenge Wanaka on Saturday 19th featuring multiple world champion, Chris McCormack, along with the Lake Wanaka Half.
