Calder Stewart Roofingsmiths as the new lead sponsors of Willowridge Wanakafest’s Street Parade 2012
The Wanakafest Community Trust is delighted to welcome aboard Calder Stewart Roofingsmiths as the new lead sponsors of Willowridge Wanakafest’s Street Parade 2012, presented by Kahu Youth. What our new sponsor’s may not realise is that the Wanaka Street Parade has been part of our Community Festival for over 25 years.
These fantastic images of the “Snow Fest” Street Parade from 1987-89, courtesy of the Upper Clutha Historical Society, show how much the town has changed over the last quarter century, though the local’s love of dress ups has not!
What’s more, 2012 marks Mount Aspiring College’s 25th year, and they are celebrating the occasion with a Wanaka Reunion over Labour Weekend. The pinnacle event of the reunion is the MAC-A-Night-Of-It musical extravaganza in the Lake Wanaka Centre on Saturday 20th October.
This unique event will bring back together some of the amazing and internationally successful musicians, bands and DJs who started out at MAC. Tickets will be available to the general public in the next few weeks – keep an eye on www.wanakafest.co.nz for more details.
Wanaka’s Community Spring Festival has been running since 1984, with the name “Wanakafest” adopted in 2002, changing from the old name of “Snow Fest”. There have been a variety of events over the years, from fireworks displays, bike races and fashion shows to an attempt at the world’s longest “Bra Fence” in 2006.
Were you in the Street Parade 25 years ago? We want to hear from you! The team at Willowridge Wanakafest would love to know more about the history of our community festival – when the street parades first began, if that’s you in the photos or any other fun and interesting tales you may have of Wanaka 25 years ago.
