International prize-winning pianist, John Chen will perform works by Chopin and Handel. The Wanaka Concert Society hosted this fantastic pianist several years ago and those who attended his concert still remember his virtuosity.
International prize-winning pianist, John Chen will perform at the Wanaka Concert Society’s next concert on Wednesday 18 April 7.30 pm at the Lake Wanaka Centre.
John Chen is a Malaysian-born New Zealand concert pianist, who made his official orchestral début at the age of fifteen, performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. In 2004 he became the youngest-ever winner of the Sydney International Piano Competition.
Since then his schedule has also taken him to Europe, North America, Asia, including performances at prestigious festivals such as Klavier-Festival Ruhr 2005 and Singapore 2006.
Mr Chen also is passionate about teaching music. He has given masterclasses and presentations on music education in the USA, Italy, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. From 2011 to 2013 he was Assistant Lecturer in Chamber Music at the Hochschule fur Musik und Theatre Hamburg. He now lives with his wife, Luwi, in Mkushi, Zambia, where they both teach at Chengelo Secondary School.
The recital will include pieces by Handel and Chopin.
