About the Chef...
Mahu Whenua’s resident head Chef, Kayleigh Kilbey, is originally from the South East of England, where she trained as a professional chef for three years, with a focus on classical French and modern British cuisine. Following her training, Kayleigh has developed her skills with extensive experience in kitchens across the world, having worked in various locations across Europe, Canada and Australia before joining us in New Zealand.
Inspired in the kitchen by her mother from a very young age, Kayleigh was quick to progress in the industry undertaking her first head chef role aged just 24. Shortly after this, Kayleigh was promoted to executive chef aged just 25 years old based on her professionalism and passion for working with food. In the Mahu Whenua kitchen, Kayleigh’s dedicated focus is showcasing the freshest locally sourced New Zealand high-quality ingredients using her finely honed skills and sharing her passion for cooking with our guests.
Wine Pairing with an experienced Wine Maker....
Our Lead Host, Anna Ward, has had a strong interest in wine from a young age, inspired by her Grandfather, who made wine for his family and friends. Several years later she went on to study Winemaking through the Eastern Institute of Technology, while already working in the NZ Wine Industry. Since that time she has made wine in not only NZ, but also Burgundy, Alsace, Oregon, California, Tuscany, Venetto, and Piemonte. Her passion currently lies with Italy and its wines, and continues to be fuelled by her ongoing winemaking sojourns to Italy.
She relishes the opportunity to share her extensive wine knowledge with the Lodge Guests. Having worked in Central Otago, Marlborough, Canterbury, and Martinborough she has developed a comprehensive knowledge of the NZ Wine regions and their wines, and is an expert at pairing flavours to enhance your dining experience.
