Thursday, August 9
The internationally acclaimed Swedish-based trio, The Klara Kollektiv will perform in the Lake Wanaka Centre on Thursday 9 August. To have such talented musicians perform here is a coup for Wanaka.
Bringing Aotearoa and Scandinavia just a little closer together, Violinist Manu Berkeljon, and Clarinettist Anna McGregor, return home with Finish-born Pianist Taru Kurki. All three have thriving international careers and once again Wanaka is privileged to host musicians of such a high calibre.
The programme begins with a new work by New Zealand composer Anthony Richie. Inspired by his time in Sweden, Ritchie charts the images and history of the Vikings in Picture Stone. A few weeks ago he received a standing ovation in the Queen Elizabeth Hall for the London première of his Oratorio Gallipoli to the Somme.
Sibelius reveals an expressive depth in his short character pieces for violin and piano and the colourful, gypsy rhapsodies of Khachaturian's youthful Trio perfectly complement the mesmerizing, poetic Hungarian dances of Bartók's, Contrasts. Applauded as the “grandfather of New Zealand music”, Lilburn had his eureka moment in 1948 when he composed the Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano.
