The ONE Summit is a six day annual district wide event held in the Southern Lakes District. It’s aim is to educate, inspire and enable our transition as a community to a carbon zero, thriving community. The inaugural event in October 2018 was a huge success with 16 events held in Wanaka, Queenstown and Glenorchy with 44 speakers and over 1,000 participants.
The 2018 Summit was held a week after the release of the Report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The Report sent a clear message that as a planet, we need to act urgently to have any hope of reaching the Paris Agreement targets. It also chillingly sets out the consequences if we do not. With the Carbon Zero Bill on the table for adoption by the end of the year and a district wide Carbon Action Plan being formulated in the Queenstown Lakes District, the time to act as a community is now.
Before we can reach any of these goals, we need to start switching on lightbulbs all over the district. Once we hit a critical mass in mind shift, systems change will follow. The Summit is about accelerating this shift in a constructive, meaningful way.
It only takes one word, one step or one act to start on the path to making our world a better place.
Let’s get to it.
