Wanaka’s Cardrona Alpine Resort is best known for some of the best skiing and snowboarding that New Zealand has to offer, but once the snow season is over, the lifts remain running for downhill biking and mountain carting. And as it turns out, Cardrona in summer is just as fun as snow…. only a bit dirtier!
If you’re a usually a winter visitor to Cardrona, then driving up in summer can seem surreal. The rolling white hills replaced by a green alpine meadow, with a zig zag of tracks winding down the hill side. But as soon as you arrive there’s instant familiarity, the iconic blue clock tower and yellow base building, the warm welcome from the Cardies team at the ticket office and that anticipation of a day of adventures to come.
These 3-wheeled pocket rockets have been especially imported from Germany and are just so much fun! Their low centre of gravity, hydraulic disc brakes and fat, knobbly tyres mean that you’ll be in complete control as you descend the purpose made tracks….But be warned, once you’ve mastered the carts the temptation to be an outright hoon is irresistible and before long you’ll be drifting and skidding your way around the corners at full speed! And then, after a quick breather on the chairlift, you can do it all again. Only faster!
Staying overnight at Cardrona Alpine Apartments high in the mountains is a rare treat and also an opportunity to experience the most amazing sunsets. Located a 1 minute walk to the lifts – there are 15 on-mountain self-catering apartments at Cardrona, and a fully-licensed restaurant that is open for dinner service every night of the week.
Cardrona in summer offers the same alpine fun and excitement as Cardrona in winter. After fuelling up on coffee and a breakfast burrito at the Mezz Café, hit the tracks for a day of chairlift accessed, 600 vertical metres of lift-accessed trail riding. The biking tracks at Cardrona are graded just like skiing in winter; green (easy); blue (intermediate); and black (you better be up for it)!
There’s also a FREE learner zone & flow track for all levels to get your legs warm for lapping the lifts as well as Bike School private lessons to hone your skills or tour the trails with an experienced instructor.
Cardrona Bike Park is open daily from December 2, 2017 – April 2, 2018.
