Wānaka is one of the best places in New Zealand to view the spectacular glaciers of the Southern Alps.
There are over 100 permanent glaciers in the mountains surrounding Wanaka which are part of Te Wahipounamu - Southwest New Zealand World Heritage Area. Nearly all the land forms in the region have been formed by intense glaciation.
Year round access to the glaciers is easy from Wānaka. Take a scenic flight around Mount Aspiring to see three of the National Park’s largest glaciers; the Bonar, Therma and Volta Glacier. Hike the Rob Roy Glacier track, arguably New Zealand’s best half day walk, for incredible views of the hanging Rob Roy Glacier. For the adventurous there are options for climbing and mountaineering, or experience a fly-walk-jetboat combo for the ultimate day exploring Mt Aspiring National Park.
