When is the Best Time to Ski in New Zealand?

With the Wanaka ski resorts of CardronaTreble Cone and Snow Farm open early June through to mid - October, each month of our ski and snow board season provides a unique experience. Take-a-look below at how they vary, to help you decide when you should visit.

JUNE - EARLY SEASON

Just can't wait to go skiing or riding? Then early season is for you! With major investments into state of the art snow – making, from both the resorts of Cardrona and Treble Cone there’s something to slide on - even if mother nature doesn’t deliver.

Average Temperatures:

  • Town: 3 to 12 °C
  • Mountain: -3 to -10°C
  • Events: Opening Day Celebrations, Matariki

Insider tips:

  • Short lift queues = more time on the slopes
  • The stoke level is high no matter the conditions - everyone is excited to be back on snow!

 

JULY - SCHOOL HOLIDAYS

There’s nothing better than a family ski holiday, whether it’s seeing the kids take their first turns, spending some quality mountain time all together, or swapping ‘brag’ stories at the end of the day.

Insider tips:

  • Pop the kids into a ski programme – they’ll meet new friends and learn to ski/snowboard, or develop their skills in a fun & safe environment!
  • Take a lesson yourself - book with a couple of friends who are the same ability & create your own group 

 

AUGUST – MID WINTER

August is traditionally the month with deep snow bases and regular snowfalls -  providing excellent powder conditions.

  • Book a heli-ski trip -  the Wanaka region is renowned for having the largest heli ski terrain in the Southern Hemisphere!
  • Make the most of ski/board demo days on mountain and try out the latest and greatest

 

SEPT - OCT SPRING SKIING

Who doesn’t love spring skiing? Longer days, warmer temperatures and forgiving ‘hero’ snow. Spring is just fun! And you get more time to ride with lifts running from 8.30am - 5pm.

  • Sunscreen. Multiple times a day.
  • Grab a spring pass for unlimited skiing & riding
