10 free things to do in Wanaka

1. Disc golf – Wanaka & Hawea

Wanaka has two disc golf courses - one 18 hole course at Lismore Park and another 9 hole course at Eely Point. The newest frisbee golf course at Lake Hawea is by the Gladstone Track and is marked with a stone marker. All you need is a frisbee - happy golfing!

2. Feed the fish & eels at the wharf

Take the kids down to the wharf on the lakefront and if you look into the water at the end you'll be impressed by the size and number of trout and native eels. For $2 you can buy fish food from Lakeland Adventures but remember - this is a no fishing zone!! 

3. Swim & BBQ

The Wanaka region is a great place to swim on a hot summers day. Lakes Wanaka and Hawea offer a number of beach options suitable for the whole family with free BBQ's around the lakes. While further afield the Blue Pools and Matukituki River offer options for the more hardy souls.

4. Lismore Jump Park & Sticky Forest

Lismore Jump Park is great for everyone with entry level rides as well as the big jumps for those who like it steep and tricky. Nearby Sticky Forest has a great network of mountain bike tracks for intermediate to advanced riders

6. Wanaka Dinosaur Park

A favourite of local children for years, this park on the lakefront has a giant dinosaur slide, plus plenty of other rides to entertain the kids. There is a free BBQ beside the park and a nice shallow swimming beach for children right in front of the park. 

7. The Hawea River Wave

Wanaka is the last place you'd think of when heading out for a surf! But with the right kayak or board there's massive amounts of fun to be had for kayakers, body-boarders and surfers on the Hawea River Wave.

8. Wine tasting at Rippon

Visit Rippon Vineyard, with jaw-droppingly beautiful views of Lake Wanaka. This vineyard was named the eighth best in the world and the best in Australasia in July 2019 and offers free wine tasting for groups of up to 6 people. Bookings essential.
