We all know some of the best hikes in New Zealand are found in the Mt Aspiring National Park. But sometimes the legs are sore or there’s a need for a different perspective. We’ve got you covered with a list of things to do in the park (that aren’t hiking!)

Canyoning

A hidden secret of the National Park – huge spectacular canyons! Descend by jumping, abseiling and sliding down waterfalls, and boulders, swim and float through water- sculpted rock features and deep clear pools.

Beginner to advanced options are available with the first canyon company in New Zealand; Deep Canyon. While South Canyons offers three locations between Wānaka and Haast. And don’t think you have to be particularly fit or brave to do this! This adventure is accessible to all!

Scenic flights

What better way to really see the whole National Park in the least amount of time? Get a birds eye view with a scenic flight.
Airborne options include: Southern Alps Air, Alpine Helicopters, Aspiring Helicopters and U-Fly Wānaka.

Jet boating

The rivers may look far too shallow, but these jet boats were made specifically for them! This is an exhilarating way to get into the National Park. The trip with Wānaka River Journey enters the National Park via the Matukituki River and also includes a small nature walk, so you can really experience this breath-taking environment. If you choose to explore with Wilkin River Jets, you’ll journey into the National Park via the Makarora and Wilkin Rivers instead of the Matukituki.

Get lux

Take in the spectacular views from the comfort of New Zealand’s highest accommodation –  Whare Kea Chalet is located 1750m high on the Albert Burn Saddle. For four months of the year, it’s covered in glorious snow and in summer the slopes of tussock grass are dotted with wildflowers.

It’s a luxurious base for many Mount Aspiring National Park adventures!
