Wanaka Weddings: Abby & Callum

Coming back home to get married was the obvious choice for Abby and Callum. They knew it would be beautiful... but the day held more surprises and special moments than they had ever imagined.

Abby and Callum share their story, secrets and tips on their beautiful Autumn wedding in Wanaka.

Why Wanaka?

It's home for me (Abby), and Callum also grew up in Central Otago. There was really no question about the location for either of us. We really wanted to have our closest family and friends get together and experience one of the most incredible and special destinations we know.

What was your favourite part of the day?

We found it hard to decide on any one part of the day, as there were so many little moments that added up to create what really was the best day imaginable for us. The helicopter flight and photoshoot on Mount Roy was an awesome way to steal some time together and reflect on the amazingness of it all. Overall though, having the dreamiest outdoor ceremony in the middle of Autumn, with the sun beaming, the spectacular lake and mountains as a backdrop, and then realizing that we were sharing all of that glory with our closest people was very surreal.

Any advice for other brides?

It may not be possible, but it worked really well for us to have what would probably be considered a short engagement (seven months). It meant we couldn't stew over decisions and question them, we just had to make a call and go with it. For example, we hadn't seen the venue before we turned up for our walk-through the week before, but it couldn't have been more perfect! Luckily this approach worked well for us, there was a lot of going with the flow (although those helping me plan may have thought otherwise!).

What time of the year did you get married and why?

We chose Autumn for a few different reasons. The biggest one being that the weather is often really settled at that time of year.

The colours in Wanaka at that time of year are beautifully rich and the light is low, which made for some stunning photographs. We also really wanted to create a cozy, dinner party atmosphere for the reception and having it dark early with outdoor fires, plus loads of candles and fairy lights made the ambience very romantic!

What would be your “must do” when getting married in Wanaka?

Make the most of local talent and be sure you and your guests save plenty of time to explore and enjoy what the area has to offer. Our favourite way to relax leading up to the big day, was walking one of the lakeside trails, absolutely lost in the peace. Followed by a brewski!
