Ready to discover the untamed beauty of New Zealand’s Deep South?

Begin your journey by flying into Tahuna/Queenstown, then venture over the hill on a scenic one-hour drive to Wānaka. Explore the lake by kayak, hike in nearby Mount Aspiring National Park, or relax in one of Wānaka’s many cafes and restaurants.

From Wānaka, your adventure can take multiple paths:

  • Head west through the dramatic landscapes of Haast Pass to the wild West Coast
  • Drive east to Dunedin, a Scottish-influenced city that’s the gateway to the wildlife-rich Otago Peninsula
  • Travel south to Bluff to experience rugged coastlines and wild seas at the southern tip of New Zealand.

Each direction offers its own unique slice of southern New Zealand, leaving only one question – what route do you choose?

Southern Must-Do’s

As any longtime local will tell you, there are some pretty incredible adventures to be had. If you’re not one for planning and prefer to wake up and see where the day takes you, here are some suggestions on what to do during your time here.

Road Trip Tips & Tricks

Consider renting an EV

Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, but be prepared for some unique driving conditions. You’ll encounter narrow, winding roads that offer stunning views but require a little extra caution.

Before each day’s journey, Make sure your car is fully charged up (you can find a map of charging stations here), and check Transport New Zealand for up-to-date road conditions, especially in winter. Remember, Kiwis drive on the left, and keep an eye out for wildlife on rural roads. Take your time, allow for plenty of stops, and enjoy the journey – the scenic routes are often the best part of the adventure!

Book your accommodation in advance

Make sure to book your accommodation well in advance, especially if you’re travelling during the summer months from December to March.

To truly immerse yourself in the local culture and support the communities you’re visiting, consider opting for locally owned accommodations. B&Bs, boutique hotels, and family-run lodges not only provide a more personal and authentic experience of the region but also ensure you’re contributing directly to the local economy. By choosing local, you’ll often get insider tips on hidden gems, personalised service, and a genuine taste of Kiwi hospitality. Plus, you’ll be contributing to the sustainable growth of the towns you visit. Planning your South Island road trip and thinking of stopping on Wānaka? Be sure to check out these accommodation options to find the perfect base for your Southern adventure.

Manaakitanga, meaning hospitality and generosity

Connection sits at the core of the Southern Way experience. It’s about taking the time to immerse yourself in the culture, and to chat with the people who call this part of the world home. This approach creates a richer, more authentic travel experience that’ll stay with you for years to come.

Try local

No trip is complete without sampling the local favourites. Treat yourself to fresh Bluff oysters, warm Southland cheese rolls, and Central Otago’s signature stone fruits. From farm-to-table restaurants to roadside stalls, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to try these regional staples. Who knows, you might just discover your new favourite food!

Be prepared

The lower half of the South Island is home to some of New Zealand’s iconic landscapes, but it’s also known for its rapidly changing weather conditions. Pack layers, even in summer, as weather can shift quickly. If out on a hike, carry a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) for emergencies, and bring plenty of water and high-energy snacks. Tell someone your plans before heading out, and stick to marked trails. Before your trip, check with the local Department of Conservation (DOC) centre for up-to-date alpine and trail conditions.

Travel responsibly

Don’t forget your responsibilities as a visitor. By respecting the environment, supporting local communities, and embracing sustainable practices, you can help preserve these treasures for future generations to enjoy and appreciate. Remember, we’re just the caretakers of this land.
