The Cascade Saddle is situated between the West Matukituki and the Dart Valleys in Mt Aspiring National Park. The Cascade Saddle Route is an alpine pass which is only suitable for experienced hikers during the summer months. It is not recommended in winter due to snow and ice. The Route links the Matukituki Valley Track with the Rees-Dart Track and it takes 1 – 2 days to complete the crossing. The Route does not cross the Cascade Saddle itself, which is impassable from the Matukituki side; however, the track does pass within a short distance of it on the Dart side. Check track conditions with the Department of Conservation prior to departing.

  • Start: Aspiring Hut (West Matukituki side)
  • Time: 1 – 2 days
  • Distance: 17 km
  • Grade: Difficult, for experienced hikers only
