The Queenstown Lakes district community supports the ambitious goal of making its visitor economy carbon zero by 2030.

Travel to a thriving future is Queenstown Lakes’ roadmap to regenerative tourism by 2030. This is an exciting journey that brings opportunities for everyone in the region. Regenerative tourism gives back more than it takes. It goes beyond minimising environmental harm to contribute holistic value that includes social, cultural, environmental, and economic benefits.

Confronting the climate emergency is a powerful enabler of a regenerative economy. Without decarbonisation, there is no hope of achieving regenerative tourism. Decarbonising the district is the first step on the path to regeneration. We have made the commitment to be carbon zero by 2030. The goal of carbon zero is carefully defined to include aviation, both flights into and from the district, and transport within the district. It is also firmly committed to removing carbon and not using offsetting as a solution. This is a hugely ambitious goal, and just one of the ways that we are tackling a regenerative future, we hope you will join us.

The Queenstown Lakes regenerative tourism strategy ‘Travel to a Thriving Future’ is now available on the link below.

Love Wānaka and Love Queenstown are the first initiatives to come to life from the region’s Destination Management Plan. These initiatives provide the opportunity for visitors to give back to our place in direct and tangible ways, supporting the protection and regeneration of our environment, ensuring it thrives now and for generations to come.
